  • Saint Gerard Majella (Mothers and Pregnancy)
Saint Gerard Majella (1726–1755) Patron Saint of Mothers, Expectant Mothers, and Children Saint Gerard Majella was born in Muro Lucano, Italy, in 1726, into a humble family. From an early age, he demonstrated a deep love for God and a willingness to serve others. Though he desired to become a priest, Gerard instead joined the Redemptorist Order as a lay brother at the age of 23. He became known for his deep humility, compassion, and miracles. Gerard’s life was marked by extraordinary charity and devotion to the sick, poor, and marginalized. His intense prayer life and faith in God allowed him to perform many miracles during his short life, including the restoration of a boy’s life who had fallen from a cliff. However, Saint Gerard is best known as the patron saint of mothers and children. The famous story of his intercession involves a young woman who was about to give birth and feared complications. Gerard’s simple blessing and prayer resulted in the safe delivery of her child, and since then, mothers around the world have invoked his aid during pregnancy and childbirth. Saint Gerard died of tuberculosis in 1755 at just 29 years old, but his legacy of love and care for families continues to this day. Prayer to Saint Gerard Majella “O glorious Saint Gerard, powerful intercessor before God and wonder-worker of our day, I call upon you and seek your aid. You, who on earth did always fulfill God’s designs, help me to do the holy will of God. Pray for me, especially in my trials and difficulties. Help me to remain pure and faithful. And, dear Saint Gerard, through your intercession, protect all mothers and children, that they may be kept safe in God’s loving care. Amen.”
